Abstract
Background/Aims: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is associated with development of gastritis, ulcer, and gastric malignancy. Recent works support that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is required for gastric H. pylori infection and it may related with MUC5AC expression. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of H. pylori on expression of TLR4 and MUC5AC in chronic gastritis and relationship between TLR4 and MUCAC.

Methods: Immunohistochemical stains for TLR4, MUC5AC and H. pylori were performed in total 112 fiberscopic biopsied tissues which were taken from body or antrum. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained slides were reviewed and histologic findings of gastritis were estimated based on Sydney system.

Results: TLR4 expression was positively correlated with severity of H. pylori infection (p£¼0.01) and activity of gastritis (p£¼0.01). MUC5AC expression was inversely correlated with severity of H. pylori infection (p£¼0.05). But there was no correlation between TLR4 and MUC5AC in gastritis.

Conclusions: TLR4 seems to be associated with pathogenesis of H. pylori related gastritis and MUC5AC expression is decreased in H. pylori infection. But TLR4 and MUC5AC are not related. More investigation about TLR4 and MUC5AC in occurrence of various H. pylori associated gastric diseases. (The Korean Journal of Helicobacter and Upper Gastrointestinal Research 2009;9:90-95)
